Day 142
Malaga
It was fabulous to have another few days off. After a morning catching up on the blog we spent the rest of the day with Pam and David. We did something very British, went to the pub, watched the rugby, our team Scotland won, ate Sunday lunch and ended the day with wine and G and T.
The following day we were still in full tourist mode. After a relaxing breakfast on the terrace (boy will we miss that when back on the road) we decided to visit Malaga. No bikes today, we caught a train! Malaga is Spain’s sixth largest city with a population of nearly six hundred thousand. It is generally accepted to be one of the oldest cities in the world, having been founded in 770BC. The Romans ruled from 218BC, then after the fall of Rome it was under Islamic rule for 800 years. The Crown of Castile regained control after the Granada war in 1487. This history has left a stunning mix of architecture for us to enjoy.
We wandered about window shopping then stopped for coffee and cake, still need to carbo load! We visited the theatre built by the Romans, only recently rediscovered in 1951.Then we went to see the Castle of Gibralfaro. This connects to the Alcazaba, the lower fortress and Royal residence. Built on the hillside overlooking the sea, they dominate the city. We were rewarded with stunning views of the bull-ring and the harbour. Lunch was calling so we headed down for a cocktail and food. Another day in paradise!
