Day 291

Red Rock Canyon

We had a very long sleep, way to go RV life! Fortunately, we only had 33 miles to go. The roads were much better today, quiet gravel roads to start then an old highway all the way to our destination. Like so many roads no longer travelled there was clear evidence of long lost businesses and homes, now abandoned and slowly decaying. They add a flavour of the past to our ride. The route also showcased the rolling hills of Oklahoma so well. Mind you the continuous up, down, then up again, was harder than we expected.

We had a headwind, it built as the day went on so we were so relieved to reach our campsite for the night, Red Rock Canyon. We rode a proper hill, i.e. steep, down into the Canyon, and escaped the wind. The tent area was empty but for us, which was lovely but we missed our neighbours bringing us treats! In the past the local Indians had used the Canyon as a winter camp, the pioneers took their wagons through there on-route West and now it’s a camping, hiking, and adventure playground.During the night I was kept awake by the endless calls of different local wildlife, fortunately they ignored our tent, not such a quiet spot after all!
