Day 328
Signal Mountain
We had been determined to slow down and enjoy the National Parks. To ensure we did this Tom had wisely booked us a second campsite in the Grand Tetons, at Signal Mountain, just a few miles along the road from Jenny Lake. We woke to a strange world inside our tent, it had snowed! Tom got rid of the coating of snow by simply thumping the tent walls from the inside. Fortunately, although the campsite had a good covering of snow, the sun soon came out and within the hour it had gone. We went over to our neighbours and fellow members of the Famous Five to say our goodbyes. We were very happy to hear that Leslie and Issa-Pierre were heading to Signal Mountain too, and even better they were driving there via a supermarket and kindly offered to do a shop for us.
We slowly packed up, and popped over to the store for a coffee whilst waiting for the sun to fully heat up the day. As I have a big birthday coming up, I decided to treat myself to a pair of binoculars, the store had a great selection and I am now the proud owner of a jazzy pair of Orange Nocs. I gave away the pair I bought earlier on the trip to a family group, hopefully I didn’t cause too many arguments between the children as to whose turn it was to use them!
We finally tore ourselves away and managed the not so arduous 10 miles to Signal Mountain. Tom had somehow managed to book us the best pitch on the site, no accident he assured me. Stunning views, our own private access to the beach and tons of space. We got quite a few visits from fellow campers wanting to know how we’d managed it!
Now much to our very pleasant surprise, Signal Mountain had a fantastic store, shop, pub and most importantly, a restaurant. By now I was fully in birthday mode, 8 June is the big day, I’ll be 60, and we decided that we might as well celebrate in style. So, no microwave nasty sandwich selection here, no we got a fantastic table overlooking Signal Mountain. A wonderful meal and even better I got The Last Word, twice! Yep, that’s the name of an awesome gin-based cocktail, I just needed my G and T pals, Pam and Catherine to share the celebrations!
After a very long lazy boozy lunch we staggered back to enjoy the rest of the day. We had a beach walk and natter with Leslie and Issa-Pierre and said our goodbyes. Tom had spent several hours taking photos and was frozen so we decided no night time shots, and retired to our tent!
