Day 349

Glacier (East)

The reason we had come to East Glacier was to ride the other end of he Going-to-the-Sun-Road. The middle section was still being cleared of snow but we could ride to Jackson's Viewpoint so off we went. The first 10 miles were pretty easy along by St Mary’s Lake, so called due to an incident many years ago. One of the surrounding mountains was named due to a Catholic priest, Father DeSmet, becoming lost in thick fog, when it cleared he saw the face of St Mary in the rock, and was able to make his way to safety. Despite looking from every angle, we couldn’t spot her though! As we left the lake and started the climb we also left behind any cars as this section was closed to traffic. It was an easier climb than from the west, which we had ridden a few days ago, but just as stunning. On the way back down we stopped and climbed up to see St Mary’s waterfall, which due to the snow melt was really impressive. Our lovely neighbours from last night had left so we had an early night.
