Day 38

Small is beautiful

A fab downhill to the coast. Popped into a bike shop for a few essentials and on we went. It was a flat coastal route, though it had a few surprises. George Cayley, born on Paradise Hill in Scarborough was an incredible man. Amongst many amazing inventions he was responsible for, in 1853 was the Cayley Flyer, the  first manned heavier than air flight in Brompton Dale near Scarborough. As we passed through Rhos on Sea, we passed a pub, the Cayley Flyer, plus many streets named after members of the Cayley family, who had owned estates here in the past. It was to be another 50 years before the Wright brothers took to the skies with the first powered flight. I knew my brother Chris would have loved this and I am sure he would have popped into the Cayley Flyer for a beer. We also saw the smallest church in the world, St Trillo. It is named after the Celtic Saint who built his cell here in the 6th century. Rebuilt many times over the years, the date of the present building is uncertain. I was overwhelmed by the scent of the flowerbeds surrounding the church,  especially the roses. A beautiful cared-for place of calm.

We then turned uphill towards our Warmshower hosts, Ruth and David. They live surrounded by woodland and we had planned to camp in their walnut orchard for two nights. Due to the forecasted thunderstorm David had kindly made space for us in the hay loft and we gladly took up his offer. It was such a calm beautiful place and we both relaxed there. We heard but didn’t see the mice!

We spent the evening sharing the most gorgeous home cooked meal and home brewed beer. Tom and I were so grateful to be able to spend time with Ruth and David and learn about their wonderfully sustainable lives at Bron Haul Farm. Do check out their website and blog.
