Day 443

Back in the USA

So here it was, ferry No.20 to take us back to the USA. We arrived early. Had a lovely natter with ex-Brit Diane, then it was time to board. Kate, who had invited us to Canada in the first place, fittingly sent us a farewell message, and we were off.

I managed to miss seeing a humpback whale as it avoided colliding with the ferry, but did get to view a few more in the distance! As we arrived in the USA, Sam, a young girl at the food store could not have been more welcoming. It felt good to be back, thanks Sam!

We headed off to ride through the Olympic Park on the Discovery Trail. The planners were clearly vying with Victoria as it was fantastic. Mile after mile of a smooth cycle path through the temperate rain forest. It was stunning, big cedars, salamanders, so much moss and more trees, many many trees! We couldn’t see the campsite our friend Carla had stayed at, so wild camped near a stunning lake.

In the morning, we continued on the trail. Feeling hungry we restocked in the small town of Joyce, at a store called, err, Joyce’s. Which came first I wondered.

The trail took us over a bridge, where we met 2 friendly American couples, Bill, Cindi, Christi and Paul. Lots of advice and even an offer of a phone number in case we needed help. Wonderful.

Tom had a campsite in mind, but first we had somewhere to visit, John’s Beachcombing Museum.  John had collected any and everything washed up on the nearby beach over the years. We were able to see some artwork created by his finds but unfortunately the actual Museum was closed. It’s full of so many different things and we were really keen to see the many ‘messages in a bottle’ he had found, ah well.

We had a 30 mile round trip to our campsite.  Much longer than we would normally contemplate, but we had vampires to avoid and a beach that was said to be stunning beyond belief!
