Day 54
Manannán mac Lir
We both had a bit of a lie in and then spent ages talking bikes and drinking coffee with David. Finally, we dragged ourselves away, and had a wonderful ride, taking in a bike trail through a country park, then we hit the hills. We climbed and climbed and, well you get the picture. Fortunately, the gradient meant we didn’t need to push! The route took in the Bishop’s Road, and it showcases the stunning coastline.
Almost at the top, we came to an awesome viewpoint. A wonderful Irish man explained what we were looking it, and said to ignore the Irish blarney of the story behind the statue of the Celtic God of the Seas. The Broighter Hoard was found at this spot in 1896 by two local ploughman, and a legend was born.
This was literally the highlight of the day and as we approached Londonderry we spotted a stunning wildcamp spot with awesome views. Getting the tent up was a struggle, we’d had 45 miles per hour headwind all day and it wasn’t letting up just yet. We managed it, made me think of Chris Tedman whose tent was simply torn up and away by the wind! Safely in, then the heavens opened!
