Day 627

Bugged out

We know we are so lucky, living the dream, we’ve seized the day, are having our best life, but sometimes all we long for is our own bed at home. 2023 is proving a hard year for Tom. He started it with a broken rib which is only just about healed, but is now suffering from what we think is a parasite infection. Whilst at Canas Castilla Tom became quite ill. I chatted with the wonderful owner Agi, who offered Tom a hammock to lie in and best of all, a toilet close by! She also had a medical box full of pills and potions. As we were many miles from a doctor Tom took up her offer of a ‘what the locals use’ tablet to kill parasites. Fingers crossed it seems to have done the trick, though recovery is slow. Perhaps not helped when I gave him a toothbrush with Mexican nappy cream on and he didn’t even notice until after he’d brushed his teeth! It was dark!

After a few days without food he tried to eat normally, which didn’t have good results, so he is now following the BRAT diet, bananas, plain boiled rice, peeled apples and toast. We’ve twice had a 2-day stop, and are trying to do shorter days. Wild camping is out and we’ve blown the budget again limping from hotel to hotel. We haven’t seen much of Costa Rica other than the highway and a few bathrooms but he is definitely on the road to recovery!
