Day 68
Greenway to the future
It was an exciting day for us today. We had changed some packing which meant that not only were we much quicker packing up and unpacking but we had also done away with a small dry bag and created space in one of the duffle bags! Result! Now who are we seeing soon and will they have room to take the bag home for us? Eh Bob??
Then the day got even more exciting. We had chatted with a fellow camper, Ja. He was working on the island and having shared a beer or two he mentioned that his cousin worked for Midwest Radio. One email and I was booked to chat on the Tommy Marren show at 9.30am.
Tommy rang, we chatted, he had done his research and had read our blog posts. I felt it went OK and maybe Tom and I would be famous? Sure enough an hour or so into our ride we heard “Are you the Muttons?”. We stopped and had a great chat with our fan... what more was to come? A shout of “Debs” and a big wave as went cycled through Newport, and well that was it! Oh well.
We were riding the Greenway from Achill to Westport. The views were stunning, to the left Ballycroy National Park slowly being replaced with views towards the Nephin Beg range. On the right was a huge bay with, as the tale goes, 365 islands, though our local fan said that it’s really only 196!
The Greenway itself is a traffic free cycle path from Achill to Westport. The designers had done something pretty unique. They had clearly taken time and clearly a lot of money to get it perfect. Not OK, not this'll do, but perfect. From the hundreds of cyclists we saw enjoying it, their effort is paying off. Wonderful! Now if only all cycle ways could be like this?
