Day 854
The Road to San Agustin
Our desert stay over, we set off for another adventure - the road to San Agustin. We soon left the desert landscape behind us, as we rode beside the Magdalena River, the source of which would more-or-less be our destination in a few days’ time. The scenery grew greener and more beautiful as we climbed high above the river, looking down on it as it wound its way along the valley floor, past dams, gorges, then wide expanse again. This was fantastic riding, and took us a few days. We had time to visit a bike shop, Nano Bikes in Altamira, who replaced the bearings in Tom’s pedals. We left it a bit too long last time and Tom didn’t want a repeat of having to cycle with only one pedal. We stayed in a few hotels, one of our cheapest yet, which cost the same as a pork pie from our local butchers!
The final climb up to San Agustin was steeper with more hills than Komoot fully prepared us for, but Tom is feeling better and I am feeling fitter, so we both enjoyed the challenge. We popped into a local vegetarian restaurant, Massala, and had our best meal yet in Colombia. Today is a family member, George’s, birthday. For some reason on this trip, we always try and go out for a meal to celebrate from afar. As usual we had a fantastic time, we even had a couple of guys busking in the restaurant. One of them was called George, naturally, we do love a coincidence. They were amazing, wait for the video, I’m certain you’ll agree. Happy Birthday George, the night is yet young here so I expect we will celebrate some more.
