Day 134
Eagles!
You might think sleeping in a garage is a bit weird, but when you’re on the road as we are, we know what is important. A safe warm shelter is wonderful. A toilet, luxury. A sink, fantastic. A washing machine, utopia. The kindness of strangers makes this trip so incredible and we felt very lucky to be able to have a lie-in, then drink a coffee and get local knowledge from Richard for our route ahead.
We were heading east, which meant the wind was behind us. We rode the majority of the day on the local ‘old roads’. As in so many areas of Spain, most traffic has moved onto the quicker main A-roads. It was easy going, even the hills, and they were pretty steep at times! With the hills came some dramatic scenery, stunning cliffs and rock formations. Then and I kid you not, eagles. Dozens of them. I had made a mistake in England, confusing kites for eagles, so I paid particular attention to their tails, wingspan and colour. Their size alone though was confirmation enough. A Google search confirmed what I knew, they were definitely eagles. The area we were in has about 750 nesting pairs of the Bonelli Eagle. I am pretty certain we saw most of them. Thank goodness the roads were quiet, as Tom and I cycled along gazing upwards not forwards!
We ended the day wild-camped besides an old picnic area. We had trees to give shelter from the ever present wind and rain, a picnic table to cook and eat our tea at, and even the odd eagle flying above, perfect!
