Day 153

A bed of thyme

We awoke very cold and very damp. Where has the sun gone? A few days off the bikes and winter has arrived!  There was nothing for it but to get going and get some miles done. A morning of climbing saw us rewarded with an afternoon of downhill. A local rider on an E-bike stopped to chat, heaping praise on us and lifting our spirits, then away he went.

The easy downhills ended and we joined a fairly busy, well for Spain, main road. During the morning we had seen so many great places to camp but we were passing mile after mile of cultivated fields of olives and vines with no real place to camp. We had decided to finish earlier than yesterday, so at 4pm we were really on the look out. Tom and I both spotted a group of trees ahead. It meant a short ride along a dirt track, but we found an ideal sheltered spot. I haven’t mentioned the head wind, it was cold and fierce and really getting us down. A group of trees gave us shelter, but even better the ground was covered with wild thyme. As we walked over it the air was filled with the sweetest scent. We were in our sleeping bags by 6.30pm lulled to sleep by the scent. Only the slight worry was how was Stephane getting on?
