Day 154
Los Chanos
It was raining! OK that is what had been forecast but no! We didn’t want to set off wet, so we pulled our sleeping bags over our heads and hoped it would stop. We were in luck, within an hour the showers had passed. We had forgotten to buy milk for our cereal, so it was honey sandwiches with yesterday’s bread for breakfast, take it from me, as fuel it was fine, as refined dining, not so much.
So we decided to stop and shop for a second breakfast at the first village we came too. In Ledana we spotted a small supermarket called Los Chanos. As usual it appeared to be the local hub full of ladies shopping and chattering. Leaving Tom to guard the bikes I popped inside for food. We have found that Spain does exceptionally good cakes, though they vary from town to town. No sticky chocolate cake, a favourite for a few days, here, the coconut cake we fed Stephane on not available either. Today’s treat was a lemon soaked sponge and it proved to be equally fantastic. Loaded up with bread, cheese, cake and chocolate I went to pay. Everyone seemed to have disappeared. No chattering ladies, no shop owner, just me. Finally, I realised they had become Tom’s fan club! I finally managed to pay, more photos, advice about the weather, (snow is coming apparently, no!!) emails exchanged, then we were finally on our way, fantastic!
We ate our second breakfast sheltering from the rain, yep it came back, under a very small bandstand, whilst we listened to a local marching band. Refuelled and entertained we hit the road. Today we had a plan. We had booked a hotel for the night. A few miles of dirt track, followed by what seemed like endless miles on the straightest road we’d ridden on, then an uphill into a horrid headwind, we finally reached our hotel for the night. Washing done, blog updated, news from Niall that Stephane is fine, though he’s broken another phone, means we can rest and hit the local bars for a meal and wine!
