Day 617
Honduras
Another day, another border crossing. We had heard that getting into Honduras was straightforward but slow. We arrived again just after a small coach load. Expecting a long wait we took our turn in the queue. Suddenly there was an excited buzz, and a girl in the queue came back to see us. Lupita is a cyclist and was keen to chat and have a photo with us. I could hear others asking “Who is it?”. Someone would say, “It’s Debs and Tom!”. Wow, I felt like a celebrity with super fans! From then on we were issued to the front of the queue, our bikes were held for us, several girls taking the opportunity to have their photo actually sitting on Debs’ bike. I am sure as soon as we left someone said “Who the heck are Debs and Tom?!”.
The change in scenery was instant. We left behind the green hills and were in a dry barren landscape dominated by volcanos. It was stunning. The road was better with a fab hard shoulder, so though we were riding on a main road we felt safe. The only issues were the ever constant head wind and the heat, the Garmin informing us it was 46C.
We had just a 100 miles to ride to cross Honduras, so we had just one hotel stop, we couldn’t face camping in that heat!
In the morning we pushed on and into Nicaragua. This was said to be the border crossing from hell. Friends talked of it taking two and a half hours. With no super fans to help us along we prepared for a long wait. Unbelievably we were through In less than an hour, including x-rays of all the bags! We celebrated with a chicken lunch, where they kindly provided a security camera so we could sit inside and watch our bikes!
