Day 700
Keeping busy
Coming home unplanned has forced not just a major lifestyle change on us, but also a lot of mental stress, and it has taken some adjusting to. We have been back over a month now and have spent more time apart than ever since we met, let alone the last 700 days of being together 24/7, and we really haven’t enjoyed that at all. Eventually things are settling down. I now have a date for my eye operation consultation, on the 8 June (my birthday!), and know I will get my operation date then. Progress, finally.
Tom has spent a lot of time up scaffolding, painting, decorating and repairing roofs. In a local park he spotted a thought-evoking piece of artwork which represented how many people are killed or injured on Northamptonshire’s roads each year, and also showed if they were in a car, cycling, walking etc.
I have been gardening and catching up with fellow bike tourer Carla. We have both spent time with our families and as it’s now half term in the UK, Tom and I are busy doing one of our favourite things, spoiling Jed! Tom loves a tunnel and fortunately so does Jed, and I am a major history buff so yesterday we explored a bit of hidden London. We took a tour of some closed tunnels under Euston Station and in the progress learnt a lot about the birth of our underground. The Metro, a word used all over the world comes from our own Metropolitan line and who would have thought that one of the major investors was a chap from Chicago who fled here in the early 1900s, having accrued vast wealth but perhaps not legitimately. We loved walking along the tunnels looking at all the adverts from the early 1960s, colours like new as there is no natural light. The walls were lined with adverts, a new TV show, ‘Coronation Street’, was about to be launched and ‘West Side Story’ was the latest hit in the west end.
We took a boat ride in Regents Park, spent ages wandering through the gardens, and ate one too many ice creams. Tomorrow we are off for round two, I think cycle touring is easier!
In the meantime, our last video from Columbia is linked below if you haven’t seen it yet.
