Day 79
Sióg
Fuelled by a breakfast of freshly picked brambles we headed for the hills. The route we had chosen was again as direct as possible, the stunning views over Kerry would not arrive until then end. We were to climb over 3,000 feet, only one really steep hill but the rest just kept on coming. We went up, we went down, again and again and again. We made sure we ate plenty, had plenty of water but as the temperature neared 30 degrees it was hard work. Little things raised a smile, another Mayo fan went crazy when he saw Tom’s flag, a Spanish family who had passed us on the road came and praised us for riding those hills. Several locals chatted fascinated by our journey and refilled our water bottles.
Eventually the stunning views of the Kerry mountains came into view. One last climb and we were at Fiona’s, our Warmshower host for the night. After her cat, Sióg (Irish for fairy), enjoyed reading Debs’ journal, we had a cuppa, a shower, washing done, then we settled down to eat a wonderful dinner, and chat the evening away. As usual within an incredibly short period of time we felt so relaxed and at home. Thanks Fiona for sharing your home with us.
